Inauguration

My prayer for our nation at the dawn of this new era is Psalm 33:

Psalm 33 - English Standard Version
The Steadfast Love of the LORD
 1 Shout for joy in the LORD, O you righteous!
   Praise befits the upright.
2Give thanks to the LORD with the lyre;
   make melody to him with the harp of ten strings!
3Sing to him a new song;
   play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

 4For the word of the LORD is upright,
   and all his work is done in faithfulness.
5He loves righteousness and justice;
   the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD.

 6By the word of the LORD the heavens were made,
   and by the breath of his mouth all their host.
7He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap;
   he puts the deeps in storehouses.

 8Let all the earth fear the LORD;
   let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
9For he spoke, and it came to be;
   he commanded, and it stood firm.

 10The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
   he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
11 The counsel of the LORD stands forever,
   the plans of his heart to all generations.
12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,
   the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!

 13The LORD looks down from heaven;
   he sees all the children of man;
14from where he sits enthroned he looks out
   on all the inhabitants of the earth,
15he who fashions the hearts of them all
   and observes all their deeds.
16 The king is not saved by his great army;
   a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
17 The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
   and by its great might it cannot rescue.

 18Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him,
    on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19that he may deliver their soul from death
   and keep them alive in famine.

 20Our soul waits for the LORD;
   he is our help and our shield.
21For our heart is glad in him,
   because we trust in his holy name.
22Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us,
   even as we hope in you.

Happy new president America. Do not forget it is the Lord who got you here.

Words Reconsidered: Taming the Tongue

As we reconsider and reexamine our words, we have to start with the familiar passage of "Taming the Tongue" (insert epic theme music). But it really does all begin here. The tongue must be controlled if we want anything in our life to go right.

-- Open your Bibles to James 3:1-12 -- (Insert cheering here) --

This section of Scripture relates our tongues to a few things and we'll take a look at them.
Bit in a Horse's Mouth
IF Jesus is in control of the reigns of our tongues, we will go right where He wants us to. If we take the reigns or fight against His steering, life will be full of unnecessary pain and disobedience. Let Jesus steer (Please do not insert 'Jesus take the wheel' here).
Ship Rudder
Our tongue guides the entire course of our life - The people we befriend, what we pray, and the things we commit to are all accomplished with the tongue. Our tongue says "yes" to either God's way or our way.
The Spark that Ignites a Forest Fire
Our tongue can literally destroy anything we are a part of, even something strong and established like a forest. How many people and ministries have been brought down by what someone said?

Look at verse 8: "But no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison."
We canNOT handle our tongue on our own. We desperately need help and there is only one place where it is even possible to look - Jesus. Jesus must be in control of our tongue or else our lives will be like an untamed horse, a rudderless ship, or a blazing forest fire. Jesus is the only way for our lives to be saved from total destruction.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:
Who is in control of my tongue, me or Jesus?
What do I have to do so that Jesus is in complete control?
Do I try to control my tongue or am I led by the Spirit and speak as He guides? Another way to ask this is, Do I try to make things happen in my life without God? or Do I chicken out when I know that I should speak up for Jesus?

Before we can move on, Jesus must be Savior and Lord of your life including your tongue. Make your life right with Him first.

Thanks for reading. I love you all.

Words Reconsidered

First of all, Happy New Year. I am going to update this blog more often in 2009.

Our words have great power. We can either tear people down or build people up (encourage). Even the flippant/sarcastic/joking words can damage people in a big way. I am going to be more careful with what I choose to say in 2009. I am choosing to be an encourager and to be more careful even in how I joke around with people. I want to build trusting and real relationships.

Words even go deeper than what we say. We need to consider the words that we hear through teaching, music, conversations we take part in, and most importantly, the words we read. Our entire lives must be obedient to and revolve around The Word.

Will you reconsider your words in 2009?

I will be blogging more about words in the days to come so stay tuned...

The Word

I love the cleansing power of God's Word (the Bible). Without it, I would be a complete mess.

I'm grateful my faith is not based on the Cubs,
Because it would be sinking lower than U.S. Subs.

Saw a movie of the 'Fireproof' kind,
Left with love and Truth on my mind.

God's love is like a mighty wave,
Jesus came and the Way is now paved.
